How to Make Sausage Gravy

Here’s how to whip up this cozy, flavor-packed gravy:

Step 1. Brown the Sausage

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up into small crumbles as it browns.
  • Cook until the sausage is fully browned and a little crispy.

Step 2. Stir in the Flour

  • Sprinkle the flour over the sausage.
  • Stir and cook until the flour absorbs into the sausage grease and forms a paste—this is your gravy base!

Step 3. Pour in the Milk

  • Slowly pour in the milk while continuously stirring.
  • Keep stirring until all the milk is incorporated and the gravy starts to thicken.

Step 4. Add the Maple Syrup

  • Stir in the maple syrup for a subtle sweetness that balances the spicy sausage.
  • Continue cooking until the gravy reaches your desired creamy consistency.

Step 5. Season and Serve

  • Season with salt and plenty of black pepper to taste.
  • Serve hot over split biscuits and enjoy every bite! These Butter Swim Biscuits are perfect to pair with this sausage gravy.

Sausage Gravy FAQ

Can I use regular breakfast sausage instead of hot Italian?
Absolutely! Mild breakfast sausage works if you prefer less spice. Just adjust the seasoning to taste.

What kind of biscuits are best?
Any fluffy biscuit will do; homemade, canned, or your favorite bakery biscuit. Try it with my Butter Swim Biscuits for extra indulgence!

Can I make the gravy ahead of time?
Yes! Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove with a splash of milk to loosen it up.

Storing Leftover Sausage Gravy

Store leftover gravy in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stove or in the microwave, adding a little milk to thin it back out if needed.

Pro Tip

Don’t rush the milk step. Add it slowly while stirring to ensure your gravy stays silky smooth and lump-free!
